Basic numerical skills (i.e. identifying which number/quantity is larger, identifying if a set of numbers are in the correct order, matching a numerical symbol to the quantity it represents), make up the foundation upon which more complex math processing is built. Identifying how children acquire these basic number skills and how such skills develop in relation to one another over time, is therefore important for understanding how children develop a strong foundation for math learning. The current line of research is focused on further understanding the development of basic numerical skills in children and the interrelations of such skills with math achievement. Insights from such research will have important implications for the development of intervention and prevention programs targeted towards children at-risk of developing poor math skills, and will inform the extent to which educators should focus on the development of basic numerical skills within early math curriculums.
